Ehryn gripped Kant’s hand like their lives depended on it. She didn’t know how much the Elisian’s honeyed words had affected him, didn’t know if they could repair the damage of her lies, didn’t even know if Kant still trusted her as much as he had learned to trust Madame Tessil in a few short minutes, but she was determined to get him out of here in one piece so she could find out. Kant, blessedly, squeezed her hand so tightly she thought he would have broken it were he any bigger. She thought that was a good sign.

Namaoii had already taken the lead, shoving her way through door after door until they found themselves in a large room filled with occupied tables. Namaoii didn’t even stop as she charged through, looking for another escape route in the hall.

It took the Elisians a second longer to realize what was happening, to hear the distant cries of their Madame First. The little group had almost made it to the far door before robed men and women began jumping up from their meal to apprehend them, clutching Goddess symbols and whispering eerie chants, their eyes alight with fanaticism and dark promises.

“Namaoii! Duck!” Ehryn screamed as one of the Elisians reached the Wolf Pup. The man’s hand shot out, fire dancing on his fingertips, tiny flames sparking towards their heads. Ehryn wrapped her arms around Kant, waiting for the pain and smell of burning flesh, but Namaoii was already striking the outstretched hand with a spark and sound of twisted metal, batting it away. The Elisian fell backwards, mouth gaping.

The other Elisians didn’t even falter, pushing their way forward. The air was filled with incense and battle songs. With spells and chants and magics that felt inky and black like Mavrikal’s whispers. “We can’t get through all of them!” Ehryn screamed.

“We don’t really have a blade-cursed choice, do we?” Namaoii yelled back, drawing her fantoii. “Stay behind me!”

Ehryn kept Kant close to her and stayed in the wake of Namaoii’s onslaught. The Wolf Pup of Clearwall didn’t flow through the Elisians like Tendaji would have. Instead, she crashed into them like a tsunami against a weathered dock. The fanatics tried to dodge out of her destructive path, and a few even moved with battle magic, but few were fast enough to escape her twirling blade. Namaoii had been sparring with Tendaji for months, and no movement, however enhanced, could compare to the way he Blinked in battle. Next to the great Faoli, the Elisians were like untrained recruits.

Even with Namaoii’s training and strength, however, the fanatics just kept coming. There were too many of them, and even the Wolf Pup couldn’t cut a straight path to the door. Hands and songs and spells reached out for them, causing cuts and burns and mind-numbing fear. Whispers of promises and threats slithered through their minds. Vows of change and calls for Mavrikal to come and finish Her work.

Overwhelmed, Ehryn looked around frantically for something to rescue them.
